WINNERS: YOUNG ELECTRONIC DESIGNER AWARDS 2003

The 2003 ITEC industry sponsored YEDA (Youth-Electronics-Design- Applications) Awards were presented to the national winners from schools across the country tonight at the Millennium Conference Centre in London. The results were announced by Moira Stuart, OBE during a special celebration dinner attended by nearly 200 guests including parents, teachers and members of the business community.

YEDA's Patron, HRH The Duke of York's Award for the most imaginative concept, was won by 16 year-old Yarm student, Kartik Logishetty for his weight bearing aid for patients recovering from broken legs or other serious injuries. This project was inspired as Kartik was recovering from his own broken leg a couple of years ago. Kartik consulted his father, an orthopaedic surgeon, when researching the requirements for his device and was able to design a viable solution, which involves a weight sensor built-in to a special sock worn on the foot of the injured leg. The sensor is calibrated to alert the wearer before he or she is aware of any pain, by which time further damage to the affected bone would be likely.

The most commercially viable project Award went to 16 years old Hannah Brice from Bassingbourn Village College in Hertfordshire for her baby-calming device, a portable vibrating cushioned mattress or seat that is activated by the infant's cry.

Dale Watts (16) of Poole Grammar School and Sarah Series (18) of the Chase School, Malvern were joint winners of the IEE prize for the Schools which are the Best Newcomers to the YEDA Awards. Dale designed an inexpensive, portable training timer for athletics track events and Sarah an incoming telephone call alert system for the hard of hearing.

The Awards, now in their eighteenth year, recognize the achievements of students who have used modern technology to devise solutions to everyday problems; which they have identified. Projects include safety and security devices for the home and for travel, PC and internet devices, devices to help the physically handicapped and to enhance enjoyment and performance in hobbies and sport.
